{"id":295,"date":"2011-10-17T14:37:44","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T18:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/?p=295"},"modified":"2016-12-10T10:22:21","modified_gmt":"2016-12-10T15:22:21","slug":"13-blackbirds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/archives\/295","title":{"rendered":"13 Blackbirds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finally got around to doing something I&#8217;ve always thought about&#8211; illustrating the poem &#8220;13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,&#8221; by Wallace Stevens (1917).<\/p>\n<p>16 x 16 inches, Ink and Acrylic on gesso board.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/blackbirds2.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/alisonstephen_blackbirds2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-306\" title=\"alisonstephen_blackbirds\" src=\"http:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/alisonstephen_blackbirds2.jpg\" alt=\"13 Ways of looking at a blackbird\" width=\"550\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/alisonstephen_blackbirds2.jpg 550w, https:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/alisonstephen_blackbirds2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alisonstephen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/alisonstephen_blackbirds2-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I<br \/>\nAmong twenty snowy mountains,<br \/>\nThe only moving thing<br \/>\nWas the eye of the blackbird.<\/p>\n<p>II<br \/>\nI was of three minds,<br \/>\nLike a tree<br \/>\nIn which there are three blackbirds.<\/p>\n<p>III<br \/>\nThe blackbird whirled in the autumn winds.<br \/>\nIt was a small part of the pantomime.<\/p>\n<p>IV<br \/>\nA man and a woman<br \/>\nAre one.<br \/>\nA man and a woman and a blackbird<br \/>\nAre one.<\/p>\n<p>V<br \/>\nI do not know which to prefer,<br \/>\nThe beauty of inflections<br \/>\nOr the beauty of innuendoes,<br \/>\nThe blackbird whistling<br \/>\nOr just after.<\/p>\n<p>VI<br \/>\nIcicles filled the long window<br \/>\nWith barbaric glass.<br \/>\nThe shadow of the blackbird<br \/>\nCrossed it, to and fro.<br \/>\nThe mood<br \/>\nTraced in the shadow<br \/>\nAn indecipherable cause.<\/p>\n<p>VII<br \/>\nO thin men of Haddam,<br \/>\nWhy do you imagine golden birds?<br \/>\nDo you not see how the blackbird<br \/>\nWalks around the feet<br \/>\nOf the women about you?<\/p>\n<p>VIII<br \/>\nI know noble accents<br \/>\nAnd lucid, inescapable rhythms;<br \/>\nBut I know, too,<br \/>\nThat the blackbird is involved<br \/>\nIn what I know.<\/p>\n<p>IX<br \/>\nWhen the blackbird flew out of sight,<br \/>\nIt marked the edge<br \/>\nOf one of many circles.<\/p>\n<p>X<br \/>\nAt the sight of blackbirds<br \/>\nFlying in a green light,<br \/>\nEven the bawds of euphony<br \/>\nWould cry out sharply.<\/p>\n<p>XI<br \/>\nHe rode over Connecticut<br \/>\nIn a glass coach.<br \/>\nOnce, a fear pierced him,<br \/>\nIn that he mistook<br \/>\nThe shadow of his equipage<br \/>\nFor blackbirds.<\/p>\n<p>XII<br \/>\nThe river is moving.<br \/>\nThe blackbird must be flying.<\/p>\n<p>XIII<br \/>\nIt was evening all afternoon.<br \/>\nIt was snowing<br \/>\nAnd it was going to snow.<br \/>\nThe blackbird sat<br \/>\nIn the cedar-limbs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I finally got around to doing something I&#8217;ve always thought about&#8211; illustrating the poem &#8220;13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,&#8221; by Wallace Stevens (1917). 16 x 16 inches, Ink and Acrylic on gesso board.
