I made this painting in collaboration with illustrator David Hollenbach, via Illaborate.com. I love this new site! Here, illustrators can work with each other to make collaborative paintings on a theme (Grumpiness, in this case).

Potato stamp pattern making
Tonight, I made some owl patterns from carved potato stamps. Here are two of the finished prints:
And here are a few process shots:
First, carving the potato. I actually used an X-acto knife.
Second, inking the potato stamp with acrylic paint.
Next, I stamped.
To make these patterns!
So long, potato stamp owls.
Strolling of the Heifers poster
Have you been to the Strolling of the Heifers in Brattleboro, VT? It’s sort of like the Running of the Bulls, but instead of bulls, there are heifers, and instead of running, they’re just strolling down the street. The Heifer Parade inspired me to design this festival poster.
Sketching in NYC
I’m posting some recent sketches I did in the inspiring “Drawing NYC” class I’m taking with John Ruggeri. We meet every Tuesday in a new spot: these sketches are from a session last Tuesday in the Union Square Barnes and Noble.
I appreciated John’s advice on drawing unwitting portrait subjects in public (i.e. go for a back view, three-quarters, or profile portrait, so it doesn’t matter so much if they shift around!)
I did not appreciate the bystander who huffed away saying, “Why don’t you people rent a room? You know, there are ROOMS for this. They’re called CLASSROOMS.”
Actually, that’s a lie. I did appreciate the huffy man quite a bit.
